The clients primary objective was to adapt their bungalow to support a new chapter in grand parenting. Overnight stays were becoming more frequent and the current arrangements within the property required change in line with modern living expectations.
The existing kitchen relied heavily on an adjoining conservatory for natural daylight with the latter failing to perform in the winter and summer months. The kitchen was large, but circulation hindered by an oversized island unit which affected cooking and prohibited entertaining contrary to its purpose.
The proposal presented a rear extension that replaced the conservatory and removed a significant proportion of internal walls to create open plan living. The internal vaulted ceilings were retained and repeated throughout the design and assisted in creating a strong exterior vernacular. Glazed gables were introduced to create drama to the combined Kitchen, Dining, Family room whilst addressed the properties countryside setting.
The final location of the kitchen was fundamental to the success of this project. The finished result reflects contemporary living and addresses generational change. The open plan space is united by a statement dining table and supporting roof lantern above. Support spaces, including the boot room and utility together with an inconspicuous snug were a requisite of the clients requirements but played down in their juxtaposition.
